Description

“PERCARLO” Sangiovese di Toscana – IGT

Percarlo is made from 100% estate grown Sangiovese grapes, especially selected bunch per bunch, from the best zones of our vineyards, which have a low yield of 1 Kg grapes per vine.

The grapes are usually allowed to mature beyond the normal degree of ripeness.
Fermentation and maceration take place in enameled cement vats and last up to 35 days. The yeasts produced are natural.
Percarlo is aged in French oak barriques for 20-22 months, bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 18 months before being released. The grapes which go into the making of Percarlo are selected, bunch per bunch, from vineyards whose soil dates predominately to the Pliocene epoch.

It is composed of layers of sand and stones which lie 2 to 5 meters deep and rest on beds of clay.
The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 270 meters above sea level.
Notwithstanding the variations from year to year which occur in every wine faithful to its terroir, each vintage of Percarlo possesses constant characteristics which give it a precise, recognizeable identity.

It is a wine with long ageing potential, a robust expression of the San Giusto a Rentennano terroir.

THE ESTATE

The estate is comprised of 160 hectares, situated at an average altitude of 270 meters above sea level. 31 hectares are planted in vineyards, 11 in olive groves, 40 in woods, 78 in cultivated and grazing lands.

The terrain is composed of various soils rich in different mineral components, sand, clay, lime, alkali, volcanic ash, argil and calcium.

The microclimate is characterized by considerable day and night temperature differences and often heat during harvest time.

All the vineyards enjoy exceptionally favourable exposure. During the months of July and August, we thin-out the natural growth of grape bunches by 30-50%, a practice called “green harvesting ,” which encourages the full and perfect maturation of our grapes.

Our farming methods remain largely manual and exclusively organic certified.

HISTORY
San Giusto a Rentennano, a name of Etruscan origin, overlooks the upper course of the Arbia river in the farthest south Chianti Classico wine zone. The estate began life as a medieval monastery of Cistercian nuns and was called San Giusto alle Monache (“of the Nuns”). In 1204 it was fortified by the Florentines, after a treaty established it as their boundry with Siena. Only portions of the ancient fortification still stand, its crenellated battlements, massive barbican wall and underground vaults, used today as the ageing cellars for our wines. The medieval estate of San Giusto a Rentennano came into the Martini di Cigala family through marriage in 1914. In 1957, it was inherited by Enrico Martini di Cigala and in 1992, by his nine children. Today Anna, Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesco, Alessandro and Luca are partners in the estate company.

The Poggio Rubino estate is located in the area above the hills of Montalcino at an altitude of 470m above sea level, about three kilometres from the town centre and here produces its rare wines. The estate extends over 15ha and the vineyards cover a surface area of 7ha, entirely cultivated with select Sangiovese while the remaining 0.3ha will be planted in Spring 2010.  On average, the vines are ten years old with the exception of the most recent ones planted in 2006 at San Prospero.  The vineyards are positioned in different areas within the territory of Montalcino.  Each individual location and the characteristics of its terrain allow for the attainment of wines with evident personalities accentuating the uniqueness of each individual vineyard.

The most suitable care in cultivation is carried out strictly by hand including the careful selection of canes during pruning and at the moment of the shoot selection along with the thinning of the clusters when the veraison starts.  This enables each single vine to maintain a vegetative balance and an excellent distribution of production, thus ensuring the complete maturation of the bunch. The goal is to produce from 1 to 1.5kg per plant in order to force each individual vine into channelling all its energy into those few clusters and, likewise, imparting to each of them the highest possible sugar and polyphenol concentration.  In turn, this permits the grapes to reach their full potential from an oenological point of view (polyphenols, tannins and anthocyans) even in most difficult growing years.  This type of management allows for both a great limitation in the use and the type of pesticides (in fact, only copper and sulphur are used) and a refusal to use chemical weed control in favour of working the land.  The maximum yield per hectare is 50 to 60 quintals. Directly in farm is possible to taste and buy ours wines Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino and visit all the winery.

Vintage 2009
Producer Fattoria Lavacchio
Wine district Pontassieve | Toscana
Wine Classification DOC Vin Santo del Chianti Rufina| Sweet wine
Grapes 50% Malvasia 50% trebbiano
Description Vineyards: Planted in 1963 and 1978 and trained in Guyot. Harvest: Begining of September precise selection of the best grapes. Vinification and maturation: The grapes are left to wither in a ventilated room for about four months. After this period they are softly pressed and the collected must is immediately put in small oak barrels of 50 litre capacity. These barrels, traditionally called caratelli, are placed in the attic of the winery where the wine slowly ferments and matures for 5 years, exposed to temperature changes during the seasons. Refinement: A few months in bottles before release. Ageing capacity: Unlimited. This wine aquires extra complexity with age. Sensory characteristics: Very pronounced amber colour. Intense, fine and pleasant on the nose with notes of raisins and candid fruit followed by honey, vanilla and dry figs with hints of walnut and coffee. At the palate it reveals a full and intense body, with a very good balance between the softness and heat of its alcohol and its freshness. The finish is long and extremely pleasant. Serving suggestion: Matured cheese, dried patisserie and dark chocolate.
